Just got over that cost and then we went away again for a freebie weekend with the caravan and the blasted fridge wouldn't light!! not really what you need when the temperature is soaring towards the 30*s. Luckily we always carry some ice packs and we did manage to juggle things round to keep food cool. Hubby kept on trying the fridge and on the odd occasion it did light but promptly went out again. We have had this trouble before so presumed it was the same fault and needed a new thermo couple. Having removed the fridge and fitted a new one tonight, he found it hasn't made a scrap of difference... dam! After tea hubby put everything back together and fixed the fridge back into the caravan and hey presto the bloody thing lit!! we will keep trying it tomorrow and see what happens. We really need it to be reliable for our next 2 week trip as there is no electric hook up to fall back on.
After all the torrential rain, thunder and lightening we had yesterday, the power went off just before tea time, we had no internet at all during the afternoon and then not being able to cook the tea as the cooker is all electric, things were a bit tense. The only solution was to get the gas bottles connected up to the caravan and go and cook tea in there, it was only spag bol and the sauce was already cooked and frozen so it was an easy meal to do. Grandaughter, Willow has been staying with us and she thought it amusing to be having tea in the caravan on our drive :-) The power came back on about 8pm.. thank goodness!
It's been quite an eventful week, on the up side hubby had his stitches out on Monday morning and his head is healing nicely, he looks much better now he's had a hair cut.. mind you so do I :-)

I always find that when the electric goes off the only things that you think of that you can be getting on with are things that need electric!

DeleteMe too, we had power loss this week. Nothing to do with the weather - one of our campers managed to blow the box that feeds the office and our 'van by charging a phone with a dodgy plug!! Great - luckily only laster a few hours before the electrician came and restored order. Glad hubby is improving. X

DeleteWe had the same problem last weekend with our caravan fridge, my ice melted ! Luckily for us a mobile caravan man was on our site and he fixed the fridge, it cost us £50 for a new dometic burner, but well worth it in the heat .The weekend before it was a new element. Do enjoy raeding your blog, as we have a caravvaning in common.Hope your fridge gets fixed soon.

DeleteIt appears to have been a dirty switch, now all is well I can think about packing for the holidays, thank goodness for a son who is in the caravan business, there has been more phone calls and photos flying about today than ever.
We just can't get enough caravanning at the moment, the beauty of being retired helps enormously!
As we have children power cuts are always an adventure in our house. Last time we went to the chippy and ate by candlelight. They thought it was great fun! We are all electric though so once in a while is ok, if it happened too often it would be a right pain!
ReplyDeleteWhen we were growing up power cuts were the norm, we had coal fires and loved to make toast it was the best taste ever until you dropped it off the fork into the fire lol.
DeleteIts strange that when we are in the caravan I dont miss having everything electric but at home its a different story.
Oh my goodness! The fridge would have gone out the window had that been me! I hope it is finally fixed. We are doing our "Virgin Caravanners" first trip at the end of August - can't go before as I am away soon and then we have to wait for our spot on the site. I am very excited. What extra do you need to equip your van with if you can't get an electric hook-up? (I'm sure there is a web site which tells me this, and Jim will also find out, but I need to know in advance for my own peace of mind!!)

Lynne you are going to love your new little wendy house, you will like how simple life can be without all the trappings of techie stuff! a comfy chair a small table and plenty of stitching is all you need :-) Oh and copious amounts of tea!
ReplyDeleteIts very rare we use electric hook ups mainly because we are tight and only go on very small sites. Our power consists of 2 large leisure batteries and a solar panel that goes on the caravan roof via the sunroof, that keeps the batteries topped up for free. We use gas for cooking(we have 2x7kg bottles), fridge (if it will light lol) hot water and heating if its cold. In the awning I have 2 sets of solar patio (fairy) lights which give a nice warm glow and outside we have some of those stick solar lights just to mark the van incase someone walks past close and trips up over something, especially good at festivals when space is tight! We have a wind up lantern and a couple of wind up torches for emergencies. You will collect all your stuff as you go along, what works for some doesn't for others. My most important kitchen stuff is a kettle, big pan frying pan with lid and a can opener lol So why do I need umpteen pans and all the kitchen paraphernalia at home!!
The head is now a scabby mess....but getting better. xx
